چکیده

92 CATARACT & REFRACTIVE SURGERY TODAY EUROPE SEPTEMBER 2011 A lthouth vitreoretinal lymphoma, retinal astrocytoma, and choroidal osteoma are rare diseases, they do occur. Therefore, it is important to have clinical suspicion of these entities because proper diagnosis may have important systemic and ocular implications. The general ophthalmologist must stay forever vigilant for causes of visual loss that might not be attributable to anterior segment findings. In the first two articles of our four-part series, we discussed vascular tumors of the retina and choroidal melanocytic lesions. In this third article, we describe the clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment of intraocular lymphoma, retinal astrocytoma, and choroidal osteoma.

Dramatic Regression of Presumed Acquired Retinal Astrocytoma with Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been used for treatment of various intraocular tumors including choroidal hemangioma, vasoproliferative tumor, amelanotic choroidal melanoma and choroidal neovascular membrane due to choroidal osteoma. This case report documents the effect of PDT for a presumed acquired retinal astrocytoma. A 42-year-old female with a juxtapapillary acquired astrocytoma was treate...

Enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography of choroidal osteoma with secondary neovascular membranes: report of two cases Tomografia de coerência óptica com imagem profunda aprimorada de osteoma de coroide com membrana neovascular secundária: relato de 2 casos

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) plays an instrumental role in the diagnosis and follow-up of several retinal and choroidal diseases such as macular degeneration, vascular occlusion, and inflammation. Recently, OCT studies of intraocular tumors evaluated the intrinsic optical characteristics of choroidal tumors imaged using enhanced depth imaging OCT (EDI-OCT). Among body structures, the chor...

Choroidal and Retinal Tumors in Adults: Choroidal Melanocytic Lesions

CHOROIDAL NEVUS Choroidal nevus (Figure 1), the most common primary intraocular tumor,1 is a benign tumor that arises from melanocytic cells derived from the neural crest. Choroidal nevi are more common in white people, with 4% of the population having at least one.1 Malignant transformation into melanoma is possible; therefore, choroidal nevi should be monitored even though the rate is 1 in 4,...

Review of Choroidal Osteomas

Choroidal osteomas are rare benign ossifying tumors that appear as irregular slightly elevated, yellow-white, juxtapapillary, choroidal mass with well-defined geographic borders, depigmentation of the overlying pigment epithelium; and with multiple small vascular networks on the tumor surface. Visual loss results from three mechanisms: Atrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium overlying a decal...
